Our Story

Why we do what we do — and who we are.

Why “Cut with Purpose”?

At the surface, we cut grass — providing a simple, honest service to our community, Richmond.

But there’s a deeper meaning behind the name.

“Cut with Purpose” reflects our commitment to reducing harm in our community. Through education, awareness, and youth engagement, we aim to help cut the risks associated with drug misuse before they take root.

Just like maintaining a lawn prevents overgrowth, early education helps young people make informed, healthier choices.

From Art to Action

Hi, we are Ruby and Krystal. We were both Grade 12 students at Steveston-London Secondary School last year, and we both believe creativity can go beyond expression—it can bring people together and create real impact.

For her Grade 12 Capstone Project at Steveston-London Secondary, Ruby turned over 30 design concepts into a community-driven drug awareness project—combining art, presentations, and student pledges to spark conversation and action.

Together, we built on that momentum by launching a GoFundMe campaign for drug awareness education in Richmond, raising $800—now evolving into Cut with Purpose: turning awareness into hands-on community action, one lawn at a time.

Both founders are passionate about keeping young people informed. They believe education — not fear — is the most powerful tool for preventing substance harm, and that students are capable of leading that conversation themselves. Ruby is now a Year 1 student at SFU Beedie School of Business, and Krystal is a Year 1 student at KPU.

Cut with Purpose was built on the belief that small, visible actions — like mowing a lawn — can support larger, long-term change through education and prevention.

“We just wanted to do something that actually mattered. If one student thinks twice because of what we shared, it’s worth every lawn we mow.” — Ruby & Krystal
